Natural Home Remedies for Indigestion

Indigestion, also known by the medical term dyspepsia, is ascribable to a problem in the secretion of digestive juices in the stomach. Usually indigestion occurs after eating spicy or fatty foods or overeating.

It can as well be triggered or made worse due to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome, stress or anxiety, obesity, ulcers, stomach infection, thyroid disease, smoking and certain medications.

Some symptoms of indigestion are bloating, gas, growling stomach, abdominal pain, burning sensation in the upper abdomen, acidic taste and vomiting.

You can easily get relief from indigestion symptoms using ingredients from your larder. For instance, sipping a little water at the foremost sign of indigestion can give you some relief as it helps increase the gastric pH.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is often used to kick start a dull stomach. Though acidic in nature, it likewise has an alkalizing effect that helps settle indigestion.

    Add one tablespoon of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar to a cup of water.
    Mix in one teaspoon of raw honey.
    Drink this solution two to three times a day for quick backup.

Fennel Seeds

Fennel seeds can be very helpful for indigestion caused by very spicy or fatty food. Fennel seeds contain volatile oils that can help reduce nausea and control flatulence.

    Dry roast, mash, and sieve fennel seeds. Get hold of half a teaspoon of this powder along with water. Stick with this remedy twice daily.
    Instead, you can drink fennel tea, made by steeping two teaspoons of crushed fennel seeds in a cup of hot water.
    Another alternative is to simply chew a spoonful of fennel seeds for symptom relief.

Ginger

Ginger stimulates digestive juices and the flow of enzymes that help you digest your food. This makes ginger an effective cure for indigestion, especially when it is caused by overeating.

In fact, as a prophylactic measure, you can sprinkle salt on some fresh ginger slices and chew it thoroughly after eating a heavy meal.

    Get hold of two teaspoons of ginger juice, one teaspoon of lemon juice, and a pinch of table salt and black salt. Mix the ingredients thoroughly and consume it with or without water, whatever causes you.
    Another alternative is to add two teaspoons of ginger juice and one teaspoon of honey to a cup of warm water and drink it.
    You can also drink homemade ginger tea to find relief from bloating, cramps, gas and stomach aches. To make ginger tea, boil one teaspoon of grated ginger in a cup of  water for 5 to 10 transactions.
    Adding ginger as a spice in your recipes can also help if you are suffering from dyspepsia.

Cumin

Cumin has a long history of usage as an Ayurvedic remedy for digestive problems including indigestion, nausea, diarrhea, and flatulence. It induces the secretion of pancreatic enzymes that aid digestion.

    Mix one teaspoon of roasted cumin seed powder in a glass of urine and drink it.
    For heaviness in the stomach, add one-fourth teaspoon each of roasted cumin seed powder and black pepper in a glass of buttermilk and drink it two or three times a day for a few days.

Coriander

Cilantro is an effective spice to treat indigestion, as it promotes the production of digestive enzymes and helps calm the stomach.

    Add one teaspoon of roasted coriander seed powder to a glass of buttermilk and drink it once or twice a daytime.
    To reduce acidity in the stomach, extract the juice of fresh cilantro leaves and mix one teaspoon of this juice in one cup of buttermilk. I do it two or three times a day.

Baking Soda

Indigestion often happens due to high degrees of stomach acids. Baking soda is one of the most uncomplicated and effective treatments for this problem because it acts like an antacid.

Stir one-half teaspoon of baking soda into half a glass of water. Drink this solution to neutralize the acid in your belly and give you relief from bloating.

5. Carom Seeds

Carom seeds, as well known as Bishop’s weed or ajwain, have digestive and carminative properties that help treat indigestion, flatulence and diarrhea.

    Grind together some carom seeds and dried ginger into a fine powder. Add one teaspoon of this powder and a little black pepper in a cup of warm water and toast it. Do it once or twice a day.
    Just eating one-half teaspoon of carom seeds can also provide relief from indigestion.

Herbal Tea

Drinking herbal tea after eating a great meal can greatly reduce indigestion. Dunk your favorite herbal tea bag into a hot cup of water and cover it for five minutes. Drink the tea while it is still warm.

Peppermint tea and chamomile tea, in particular, help calm your stomach and ease digestive problems.

Basil Leaves

Basil is an excellent Ayurvedic remedy for upset stomach and acid reflux. It also helps relieve intestinal gas, thanks to its carminative properties.

    Add one teaspoon of basil to a cup of hot water and leave it to steep for 10 minutes. Drink up to three cups of this tea a day.
    Mix 5 or 6 ground basil leaves, ¼ teaspoon of sea salt and a little black pepper powder in 2 to 3 tablespoons of plain yoghurt. Consume it 2 or 3 times a daylight.

Cinnamon

This readily available spice can be of big help when suffering from indigestion. Cinnamon helps in the digestive process and can supply relief from cramps and bloating.

    Get a cup of cinnamon tea by adding one-half teaspoon of cinnamon powder to a cup of boiling water and let it steep for a few minutes.
    Drink it while it is still warm for best effects.

These home remedies will help relieve symptoms of indigestion. Nevertheless, if you have intense abdominal pain or excessive vomiting, consult a doctor right away.
